How to Build An Email List that Matters

When it comes to building an email list and a Facebook fan base, most people are overly concerned about stepping on toes. There are always new social media platforms that come and go and it is important to understand that even if you have thousands of Instagram followers today it doesn’t mean that this is going to mean anything in 10 years. An email list is the only true long-term form of communication to keep your fans and customers engaged. They will put their name out there and request that someone come to visit their website or Facebook page, but they stop short of asking their customers to join their mailing list. While there are certainly some folks that will turn you down, that should never be a reason to not do it. The vast majority of potential customers will gladly allow you to add their email if you do it correctly.

So how do you do that? How do you present your offer to the client in such a way that you will not look like some type of super spammer?

It begins by targeting the right people. If you are the owner of an awesome website or Facebook page about cats, then it would be silly to be on a forum about dogs looking for email prospects. Step one is as simple as it gets…ask the right people. Not only will you get email participants that say yes, but you will also get participants that will appreciate what you have to say. They also will spread your name and brand around to the people they communicate with.

The next step is to create a quality newsletter. Once you establish an industry newsletter that provides value, you will have a certain number of people gravitate to you without you having to do too much. This is not going to be a huge rush, but it will give you a base to work with. The single best way to build your email list is to provide information or product that they can’t get anywhere else. You might have to pay for top-notch content, but it is usually worth it if you do your homework.

Now that you are targeting the right people and providing content that people in your industry will value, you can start searching for people to join you. Frequent those areas that people in your industry will be and find questions that need answering. If you can provide someone with a free answer to a tough question, they are not going to mind signing up for your newsletter on the same subject. You can prove your worth to them by providing answers and they will then look to you when other questions come up.

It really is all about communication and doing the leg work. If you know what you are doing then you should seek out ways to prove it. Don’t wait on the questions to come to you. You go find the questions. That is where the email participants are at. Forums, Facebook pages, Twitter groups, chat groups, and any other places that are organized by topic would be a wonderful place to start. Just dive in and start talking with others about what you do.

If you do the things mentioned here, then you should have no reservations about asking for an email address and a subscriber. People don’t mind getting information that will be of interest to them and that can help them live a better life. Don’t let an occasional no stop you. Step bravely into this new world and don’t rely only on your Instagram followers, Twitter followers, or Facebook likes to communicate with your customers.
